"The Artist in Exile: Latvian Refugee Art 1944-1950" - Lithuanian World Center Museum (October 15- November 27, 2011)

2011-10-15 19:00:00

The Artist in Exile is the second traveling exhibition organized by the Global Society for Latvian Art (www.latvianart.org), and is presented in collaboration with the Klinklāva Gallery at the Latvian Center Garezers in Three Rivers, Michigan.  The exhibit features work by 24 artists created when these artists were living as displaced persons during the years 1944-1950.  After the opening reception in the summer of  2010, the exhibit traveled  to centers of Latvian diaspora culture throughout the United States, including Minneapolis, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., where it was on display at the Latvian Embassy during the time of Latvia’s President Valdis Zatlers visit to the United States.

The Global Society for Latvian Art is working to establish a museum in Cēsis, Latvia that will be dedicated to collecting and preserving for future generations a collection of art work created by Latvian artists who left Latvia as a result of the Second World War. The Society has organized two traveling exhibitions. The first exhibition, work by contemporary artists of Latvian descent from three continents, was on display in 18 regional Latvian museums from 2008 – 2011. “The Artist in Exile” presents historic works from the post-war years and is a fascinating glimpse into this unique period in Latvian art history.

The Global Society is delighted to join with our Baltic neighbors, the Lithuanians, whose history is so similar that of Latvia, in a combined exhibition of Latvian and Lithuanian refugee art.

The opening reception is Saturday, October 15 at 7 PM.
