Chicago Lithuanian Opera
The Chicago Lithuanian Opera (“Lithuanian Opera Company”) is an exceptional phenomenon not only in Lithuania’s musical history but also in the global world of music. Founded in 1956, it is the only national opera company in the world that has consistently staged operas in the diaspora for more than half a century. Over decades of continuous activity, it has become an important center of Lithuanian culture in the United States, steadily nurturing the art of opera while bringing the community together through projects of high artistic value.
Since its first production, Rigoletto, the company has presented more than 40 opera productions, including masterpieces of the international classical repertoire such as La Traviata, Aida, Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro, The Lithuanians, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Pagliacci, and The Gypsy Baron, among other notable works by renowned composers. A significant part of its repertoire also includes operas by Lithuanian composers, such as Gražina and Pilėnai, which have helped preserve and strengthen Lithuanian cultural identity beyond the borders of Lithuania.
Today, the company has more than 40 members. The Music Director is opera soloist Nida Grigalavičiūtė, and the Assistant Music Director is Gilija Krūmaitienė. The activities of the opera are overseen and implemented by the Board of the Chicago Lithuanian Opera, whose leadership ensures the organization’s continuity, growth, and artistic excellence.
In addition to staged operas, the organization has produced numerous concerts, cantatas, and other vocal music programs, as well as formal galas and cultural events that have become an integral part of Lithuanian community life. The opera regularly brings together professional soloists, conductors, musicians, and choristers while also providing opportunities for emerging talent to develop and perform.
The mission of the Chicago Lithuanian Opera is to preserve and promote Lithuanian musical culture, strengthen national identity, and foster a vibrant cultural dialogue between Lithuania and the diaspora. Through its work, the company not only presents classical repertoire but also actively contributes to the continuity of Lithuanian culture worldwide.
Čikagos lietuvių opera yra ypatingas reiškinys ne tik Lietuvos, bet ir pasaulio muzikos istorijoje. Tai vienintelė tautinė operos trupė pasaulyje, daugiau nei pusę amžiaus išeivijoje nuosekliai statanti operas, įkurta 1956 metais. Per ilgus ir nenutrūkstamos veiklos dešimtmečius ji tapo svarbiu lietuvių kultūros centru Jungtinėse Amerikos Valstijose, nuosekliai puoselėjančiu operos meną ir telkiančiu bendruomenę per aukštos meninės vertės projektus.
Nuo pirmojo pastatymo – „Rigoletas“ – opera pristatė daugiau nei 40 operų pastatymų, tarp kurių gausu pasaulinės klasikos šedevrų: „Traviata“, „Aida“, „Karmen“, „Figaro vedybos“,„Lietuviai“, „Toska“, „Madam Baterflai“, „Pajacai“, „Čigonų baronas“ ir kiti žymių kompozitorių kūriniai. Reikšmingą repertuaro dalį sudaro ir lietuvių autorių operos, tokios kaip „Gražina“, „Pilėnai“
Šiuo metu kolektyvą sudaro daugiau nei 40 operos narių. Muzikos vadovė –operos solistė Nida Grigalavičiūtė, muzikos vadovės asistentė – Gilija Krūmaitienė. Operos veiklą prižiūri ir įgyvendina Čikagos lietuvių operos valdyba, kurios lyderystė užtikrina organizacijos tęstinumą, augimą ir meninę kokybę.
Be operų pastatymų, organizacija surengė daugybę koncertų, kantatų ir kitų vokalinės muzikos programų, taip pat iškilmingų pokylių bei kultūrinių renginių, tapusių neatsiejama lietuvių bendruomenės gyvenimo dalimi. Opera nuolat suburia profesionalius solistus, dirigentus, muzikantus ir choristus, kartu suteikdama galimybę atsiskleisti naujiems talentams.
Čikagos lietuvių operos misija – saugoti ir skleisti lietuvišką muzikinę kultūrą, stiprinti tautinę tapatybę bei kurti gyvą kultūrinį dialogą tarp Lietuvos ir išeivijos. Savo veikla opera ne tik pristato klasikinio žanro kūrinius, bet ir aktyviai prisideda prie lietuviškos kultūros tęstinumo pasaulyje.
