As you may know, the Lithuanian World Center has been carrying out a multi-year project to install a fire protection sprinkler system throughout the building to meet State of Illinois life-safety requirements for places of assembly.
Project Phases
Because our building is so vast and the entire project so costly (more than $500,000), the Lemont Fire Protection District has allowed us to install the system in phases over several years. Since 2011, sprinklers have been installed in sections, providing coverage for our classrooms, gyms, the multipurpose room, banquet hall, kitchens, and other areas. Last year, we completed work in the first half of the art museum. This year, we focused on the second half – the Folk Art Wing.

The Folk Art Wing
Located on the lower level of the west wing of the Lithuanian World Center, the Folk Art Wing is home to the Lithuanian Folk Art Institute Chicago Gallery, which displays traditional costumes, decorated Easter eggs, “sodai” (straw mobiles), woven tapestries, and other works of folk art. The wing also houses an immense collection of wooden sculptures belonging to the Lithuanian Museum of Art.

Why Fire Protection Matters
Installation of a fire prevention sprinkler system in the Folk Art Wing helps protect the life safety of our visitors. It also helps safeguard priceless artwork, as a single fire could destroy artifacts that would be very difficult to replace. With sprinklers, a fire is quickly contained before it can spread—dramatically reducing the risk of catastrophic loss.
This Year’s Phase
This summer, while the Lithuanian Museum of Art was closed for renovations, the existing 4″ water pipe in the main hallway was extended into the Folk Art Wing and divided into four branches to provide full area coverage. Heat-activated sprinkler heads were installed throughout, in accordance with National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 13. The new pipes are already in place, and once the final inspection is completed, the system will be connected and activated. Project cost – $49,300.

Projekto etapai
Kadangi mūsų pastatas labai didelis, o projektas – itin brangus (bendra kaina viršija $500,000), Lemonto priešgaisrinė tarnyba leido sistemą įrengti dalimis. Nuo 2011 m. purkštuvų įrengimas vykdomas etapais – jau apsaugotos klasės, sporto salės, veidrodžių salė, banketinė salė, virtuvės ir kitos patalpos. Praėjusiais metais tęsėme projektą pirmoje dailės muziejaus dalyje, o šiemet įrenginėjame muziejaus antrąją dalį – tautodailės sparną.

Tautodailės sparnas randasi Pasaulio lietuvių centro vakarinio sparno žemutiniame aukšte. Jame veikia Lietuvių tautodailės instituto Čikagoje galerija, kurioje eksponuojami tautiniai kostiumai, margučiai, sodai, gobelenai ir kiti liaudies meno kūriniai. Čia taip pat saugoma gausi medžio drožinių kolekcija, priklausanti Lietuvių dailės muziejui.

Kodėl svarbi priešgaisrinė apsauga
Purkštuvų sistema tautodailės sparne užtikrina lankytojų saugumą ir padeda apsaugoti neįkainuojamus meno kūrinius nuo gaisro, kuris galėtų padaryti daug žalos. Purkštuvai užtikrina, kad gaisras būtų greitai suvaldytas ir neišplistų, tokiu būdu sumažinant galimybę, kad visa kolekcija būtų prarasta.
Šių metų darbai
Šią vasarą, Lietuvių dailės muziejui užsidarius remonto darbams, iš pagrindinio muziejaus koridoriaus buvo pratestas vandentiekio vamzdis į tautodailės sparną ir padalintas į keturias šakas, kurios padengia visas esančias patalpas. Prie vamzdžių įrengtos nuo šilumos suveikiančios purkštuvų galvutės, atitinkančios Nacionalinės priešgaisrinės apsaugos asociacijos standartą (NFPA 13). Vamzdžiai jau vietoje. Liko tik padaryti galutinę inspekciją ir prijungti vamzdžius prie pagrindinės sistemos. Projekto kaina – $49,300.
