Every year, the Lithuanian World Center Board of Directors approves major capital improvement projects to help ensure that our building and grounds remain safe, accessible, and welcoming for today’s community and future generations. This year, one such project included replacing the next sections of roofing to better protect the Center’s interior spaces from the elements. Two years ago, we installed a new 23,000-square-foot roof over the central part of the building. Last year, we replaced the 6,000-square-foot roof over the west end and the 400-square-foot roof over the church entrance. This year, we continued this work by replacing the aging roofs over the southeast wing and the garage of the Lithuanian World Center.

Spanning more than 7,000 square feet, the southeast wing roof protects more than 15 classrooms used by the Maironis Lithuanian School, which serves hundreds of children who attend the school to learn Lithuanian language, history, and traditions. Covering more than 1,000 square feet, the garage roof protects the Lithuanian World Center garage, which serves as storage space. This summer, both of these roofs were successfully replaced, helping to prevent water damage and improve the safety of the underlying spaces. Both new roofs are expected to last more than 20 years before replacement is needed again.

Kiekvienais metais, Pasaulio lietuvių centro taryba patvirtina didelės apimties patalpų gerinimo projektų sąrašą. Šie projektai skirti centro pastato ir aplinkos saugumui, prieinamumui ir patogumui ne tik šiandienos bendruomenei, bet ir ateities kartoms. Šiais metais, vienas svarbus projektas buvo pakeisti dar dvi stogo dalis, apsaugančias centro vidų nuo gamtos stichijų. Prieš du metus įrengėme naują 23,000 kv. pėdų stogą virš centrinės pastato dalies, o pernai pakeitėme 6,000 kv. pėdų stogą virš vakarinės pastato dalies ir 400 kv. pėdų stogą virš bažnyčios įėjimo. Šiais metais tęsėme šiuos darbus, pakeisdami pasenusius stogus virš Pasaulio lietuvių centro pietrytinės pastato dalies ir garažo.

Stogas virš pietrytinės pastato dalies, apimantis daugiau nei 7,000 kv. pėdų, apsaugo daugiau nei 15 klasių, kuriose šimtai Maironio lituanistinės mokyklos mokinių mokosi lietuviškos kalbos, istorijos ir tradicijų. Garažo stogas, dengiantis daugiau nei 1,000 kv. pėdų plotą, apsaugo Pasaulio lietuvių centro garažą, kuris tarnauja kaip sandėliavimo vieta. Šių metų liepos mėnesį abu šie stogai buvo sėkmingai pakeisti, padedant sustabdyti vandens patekimą į pastatą ir užtikrinti šių patalpų saugumą. Abu stogai turėtų tarnauti daugiau nei 20 metų, kol juos vėl reikės pakeisti.
